The FC Wisconsin U15 Regional Competitive team took its first major road trip last weekend to compete in the SLSG Fall Classic in St. Louis! The team began the tournament competing against a tough team from Illinois, but defenders Marija Peharda, Claire Wattenbach, Grace Doering, Bella Palladino, and Nadia Felizmena all stepped up to keep the backline organized, putting in hard tackles from the 1st to the final minute. The team battled for the entire 70 mins, but ultimately fell 0-2, despite creating several opportunities to score. Wide midfielder Avery Bell helped create multiple chances, putting the opposing defenders under an immense amount of pressure.
The team stepped up their level of play during game two. Midfielders Missy Howard, Katie McNamara, and Ashley Johnson moved the ball well, looking to circulate until they could find good opportunities to play forward. Sadie Siebert moved from midfield to center forward and created multiple 1v1 opportunities to goal, coming remarkably close to putting one away for her team. Forward Ava Zamora and wide midfielders Ava Auchter and Niki Mileusnic put in several tough tackles to win the ball higher on the field and get it behind the backline. Once again, the finishing touch wasn't quite there, but goalkeeper Georgia Giudice made several exceptional saves to earn a 0-0 tie.
Game 3 was an early one and required the players to push through the fatigue and knocks they had acquired throughout the weekend. Mia Brunelli stepped up for her team, scoring a goal in the first half, and the team held on under some pressure to earn a 1-1 tie.
“I am extremely proud of these athletes, the level at which they competed this weekend, and the progress they have made over the course of the fall season," said coach Joana Bromley. "I am eager to continue to work with this group and see what more they accomplish as they continue to grow."
The team will now take a few weeks off before beginning indoor training as they look to keep growing and improving this winter!
