In a surprise appearance, Milwaukee native and current Ireland Women's National Team Player Shannon Smyth stopped by FC Wisconsin Eclipse training on November 19.  Smyth currently plays professionally for Amazon Grimstad FK in Norway.  She played youth soccer in Milwaukee before moving on to play collegiately for the University of Louisville, where she won multiple Big East honors.

Smyth was back in Milwaukee on a short break for Thanksgiving, before she leaves for the USA vs. Ireland game on November 28 in Portland, OR, where she will be playing for Ireland.  (In a unique coincidence, current FC Wisconsin Eclipse coach, and former USA international, Kate Markgraf will be in studio for Fox Soccer for the game as well!)

Smyth briefly spoke to the players about the lessons she has learned over her career that helped her reach her goals in the game, and repeatedly emphasized the importance of knowing that every player is capable of doing unique things that no one else on their team can do.  She also discussed the importance of learning from every coach, and "putting in your pocket" the things they teach you about your game in order to keep learning and improving.

Smyth is currently a writer for Our Game Magazine, where she writes features about womens and girls soccer throughout the world.  She is currently working on a story about the Elite Clubs National League and the impact it is having on American female youth soccer.  Look for the story in the coming weeks!
